The best history of American yachting from its beginning into the 20th century is the series of articles called "Traditions and Memories of American Yachting," by William P. Stephens. The series appeared in Motor Boating magazine nearly every month from June 1939 through July 1946. Motor Boating put all but 10 of the articles into a book with the same title as the series. This book has been out of print for a good many years and much-sought-after copies come onto the secondhand market only rarely.
